Thai Lue Weaving in Laos

Shot in Laos while participating in a week-long program studying economic empowerment and post-conflict recovery. Winter 2017.

Weaving is an important tradition in Thai Lue villages, a minority group in Laos. Women in the Nayang village, like Nud pictured here, now produce scarves and other goods for the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, a nonprofit dedicated to “preserving cultural diversity in Laos.” Is this a successful way of promoting cultural traditions or a commodification of culture?
